The Motability Scheme provides a simple way to lease a new car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair without the hassle of owning and running one. The brand has a life-changing impact on its customers, with many describing it as a “superhero” – however the cold and clinical old website did little to showcase this.

Together we created a new online customer experience that better facilitated the brand vision “to empower people with different capabilities to attain their everyday freedom.”

Design direction

Our new design direction centred around the concept of “Everyday freedom” and brought to life the brand’s inspiring nature. Open space, natural curves and pops of colour featured heavily throughout the UI, feeding into a confident yet approachable design. One of my highlights of the project was our collaboration with artist Jess Oddi to create a set of inclusive illustrations which bring moments of joy and warmth to the experience.

User interface design

Keeping the user at the heart of our work with Motability, we crafted an interface that is accessible to people with a range of physical and cognitive capabilities, whilst being a joy to use. We simplified complex processes by providing a guided experience and serving concise information for users at the right times. Our modular approach ensured the product could be rapidly scaled by both developers and client.

Scaling the experience

With the work due to drop in phases, the first release focused on simplifying the onboarding journey and breathing life into the UI. The brand will continue to roll out our updates over the next year, with the greatly improved ‘Vehicle Search’ journeys due for release mid 2023.
